Groove Demons

The other night, the family and I attended a friend's birthday party that featured a high-energy cover band called Groove Demons. Being me, I immediately jumped at the chance to make some images of the performance.

CSBBCS Conference

I was honoured to be asked by my friend (and conference organizer) Glen Bodner to do some event photography for this year's Canadian Society for Brain Behaviour and Cognitive Science conference, hosted in Calgary for the first time in more than 20 years. Event photography is not my usual bailiwick, and while portraits are where it's at for me, I thoroughly enjoyed this unique challenge. Dealing with changing, mostly indoor lighting conditions made me ever-thankful that my 6D is a low-light champ. Glen did a great job pulling together the weekend for attendees from across the country.

I was also thankful for the 'black foamie thing' that I learned about while pouring over New York wedding photographer Neil van Niekerk's awesomely informative Tangents blog. Those who've had me do indoor portraits have no doubt seen me attach the classy piece of black fun foam to my on-camera flash to get better results bouncing light off a wall, and that's just what I did for a few shots of award-winners at the conference.
