As we slowly thaw from this deep freeze, I thought it a good time to share a portrait session from balmy October. Many of my family sessions involve younger kids, and in my experience the first priority when scheduling with little ones is not to interfere with naptime. We shoot whenever is best for the youngest subject. That often means making pictures in the early- to mid-afternoon, when the light is at its harshest. Of course, we embrace whatever light is available and still produce lovely work, but I was excited when I set up the session with Deanne, Jose, and Arianna that we could aim for around sunset and produce images with a warm, ethereal glow.
The resultant work includes some of my favourite images I've ever made, thanks not only to the great light but also the family's warmth with each other and enthusiasm in front of the camera. Check some of them out:
