Portraits as the Sun Goes Down

As we slowly thaw from this deep freeze, I thought it a good time to share a portrait session from balmy October. Many of my family sessions involve younger kids, and in my experience the first priority when scheduling with little ones is not to interfere with naptime. We shoot whenever is best for the youngest subject. That often means making pictures in the early- to mid-afternoon, when the light is at its harshest. Of course, we embrace whatever light is available and still produce lovely work, but I was excited when I set up the session with Deanne, Jose, and Arianna that we could aim for around sunset and produce images with a warm, ethereal glow.

The resultant work includes some of my favourite images I've ever made, thanks not only to the great light but also the family's warmth with each other and enthusiasm in front of the camera. Check some of them out:

Rebecca, Nick, and the girls

Spent a wonderful, sunny afternoon with this wonderful, sunny family a few weeks ago at Baker Park. Family sessions should always be scheduled around what's best for the littlest member, to optimize moods and energy all around, so that meant shooting mid-afternoon when the sun was pretty powerful. No trouble, though: we just sought out shady backdrops and balanced the intense ambient light with some off-camera flash.

I'm really pleased with how these images came out; there's a lot of personality and joy in this family, and they were game to bring it out for the camera throughout the shoot. Check it out:

The Cramptons

Holy moley am I behind on blogging! Fall portrait season means my computer time is pretty much all taken up by post-processing, gallery making, and such, but now I've found a few minutes to share a shoot with you.

And what a shoot it was! The Crampton family are some of my favourite people on earth, and so it was a pleasure to do family portraits with them once again. The girls are great fun, pretty much always on the verge of laughing; this time they were joined by the newest member of the family, little Everett.

We headed out to Baker Park one afternoon last month, and got some great, lighthearted shots. Here are a few:

Kristen's Graduation Portraits

Kristen and her family came down from Edmonton a couple of weeks ago to have some graduation portraits made, and we were fortunate enough to score a beautifully sunny evening to shoot on at Baker Park. She brought her elegant and fun, gorgeously green grad dress with her, and her cheery personality really comes through in the images.

This session also happened to be my first since switching over from Canon gear to a Fujifilm system, and I was thrilled with how my X-T1 performed. Without geeking out too much, I'm really pleased with the image quality in the files, and found a number of features specific to this type of camera to be extremely useful. The small size and light weight of the Fuji mirrorless system is ideal for the type of work I do, and I'm excited to continue flexing its muscles in different circumstances.
