Holy moley, it's been a while since I've put up a blog post! Busy with life, I suppose, but I wanted to share a few pics from a great session I had a few weeks ago. The Muncasters brought me in again for some more family portraits and maternity images, since now they are expecting! (yay!) As with the first time we worked together, we had a great time, with lots of laughs. Little Man just loved the camera and was keeping us on our toes, grabbing the spotlight with his impromptu poses. Phoblographer Interview
Well this is a first: The Phoblographer.com just published an interview they did with me about my work. While I'm not crazy about the title - the word 'perfect' is a bit much - I'm honoured and flattered they'd take the time to feature m. Check it out by clicking here.

The Muncasters
I photographed the Muncaster family in October near their home - we went for a stroll in the late afternoon just looking for great light and simple environments, and found plenty of both. It was exhilarating to be kept on my toes by both a location I hadn't visited before and by their awesome one year-old, Corbin, who, like most toddlers, had a mind of his own and feet made for walking away.
We had a lot of fun together; here are a few sample pics:

Portraits as the Sun Goes Down
As we slowly thaw from this deep freeze, I thought it a good time to share a portrait session from balmy October. Many of my family sessions involve younger kids, and in my experience the first priority when scheduling with little ones is not to interfere with naptime. We shoot whenever is best for the youngest subject. That often means making pictures in the early- to mid-afternoon, when the light is at its harshest. Of course, we embrace whatever light is available and still produce lovely work, but I was excited when I set up the session with Deanne, Jose, and Arianna that we could aim for around sunset and produce images with a warm, ethereal glow.
The resultant work includes some of my favourite images I've ever made, thanks not only to the great light but also the family's warmth with each other and enthusiasm in front of the camera. Check some of them out:

"In Studio" with the Shandruks
I had an outdoor shoot planned with my friends the Shandruks, but mother nature had other plans, replacing the sun and fall colours with icy winds and a dreary sky threatening to snow (which it did). Not ideal for family portraits. Fortunately, the family happened to be right at the beginning of a basement renovation, meaning their basement was essentially a big empty studio. I brought along a white backdrop and we did the shoot there, with, I think, some fun results. Among my favourite aspects of this shoot was that the space was so open, the kids could burn off energy in one area of the basement, then come to the 'studio' refreshed. Check out a few of the pics:

Rebecca, Nick, and the girls
Spent a wonderful, sunny afternoon with this wonderful, sunny family a few weeks ago at Baker Park. Family sessions should always be scheduled around what's best for the littlest member, to optimize moods and energy all around, so that meant shooting mid-afternoon when the sun was pretty powerful. No trouble, though: we just sought out shady backdrops and balanced the intense ambient light with some off-camera flash.
I'm really pleased with how these images came out; there's a lot of personality and joy in this family, and they were game to bring it out for the camera throughout the shoot. Check it out:

The Cramptons
Holy moley am I behind on blogging! Fall portrait season means my computer time is pretty much all taken up by post-processing, gallery making, and such, but now I've found a few minutes to share a shoot with you.
And what a shoot it was! The Crampton family are some of my favourite people on earth, and so it was a pleasure to do family portraits with them once again. The girls are great fun, pretty much always on the verge of laughing; this time they were joined by the newest member of the family, little Everett.
We headed out to Baker Park one afternoon last month, and got some great, lighthearted shots. Here are a few:
